Education & Litaracy

Poverty and a lack of resources make it very challenging for these children to learn and many children walk miles every morning through dirt road and makeshift pathway that are sometimes unpassable due to bad weather because, they have no schools in their villages. Did you know that three out of every five children in Belize are not enrolled in school today, especially among the male population? and that only two out of every five children will actually finish high school. Many children in Belize yearn for the opportunity to go to school but the financial burden is just too high. It cost a  family living in Belize $0.32 for every $1.00 earned to send a child to school. Children in Belize will do anything to learn and succeed, many are willing  to go to class until 9:00pm  and many stay up late reading every book they can find by candlelight on the floors of their homes because they have no electricity. Many schools in Belize still do not have adequate equipment, most of the children have to share pencils, paper, books, and even desks, and in some cases there is standing room only. Many parents do not have adequate finances  to pay for uniforms and lunches for their  children to attend schools so they stay at home and eventually drop out.
